We were totally enchanted by our first visit to the perched village of Gorbio, high above Menton. A beautiful restaurant caught my eye on the main town square, Place de la Republique<\/strong>. It was closed so Marla and I said we would try it on our next visit. It took 6 years but we called them for a lunch reservation<\/strong> to celebrate Paxton\u2019s birthday for our party of 12.<\/strong> They don\u2019t have a website or email, and\u2026they only accept cash payments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marla sits next to a celebrated elm tree planted in 1713. It commemorated the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht, which returned the County of Nice to the Duke of Savoy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restaurant was like walking into\u2026well\u2026 a delicious mix of part Paris flea market, and one\u2019s eccentric grandmother\u2019s ancient French chateau.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a dish I will remember forever! I asked for a combination of daube of beef (their house specialty of long cooked short ribs) and a sensational ravioli. Oh my! One of my favorites of all-time!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember what I said about \u201cno credit cards\u201d? I told the owner in jest, “I didn\u2019t have any money so I need to work off my bill” then I popped behind the bar and started drying glasses with the owner, Yvan Bracco! The restaurant<\/strong> has been in the same family for 4 generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, the restaurant was first built in 1880, and was purchased by Yvan\u2019s great grandfather in 1924. They close at the end of October and reopen in March. They were awarded \u201cL\u2019Assiette Michelin.\u201d Tradition reigns supreme in this simply wonderful restaurant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
