We stayed at the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sofitel.accor.com\/en\/hotels\/3123.html?merchantid=seo-maps-KH-3123&amp;sourceid=aw-cen&amp;utm_source=google+Maps&amp;utm_medium=seo+maps&amp;utm_campaign=seo+maps&amp;utm_term=Sofitel-Launch\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sofitel.accor.com\/en\/hotels\/3123.html?merchantid=seo-maps-KH-3123&amp;sourceid=aw-cen&amp;utm_source=google+Maps&amp;utm_medium=seo+maps&amp;utm_campaign=seo+maps&amp;utm_term=Sofitel-Launch\"><strong>Sofitel Angkor<\/strong> <strong>Phokeethra Resort.<\/strong><\/a> <strong>Our last visit to Siem Reap was in 2023 with two of our grandsons from Dallas.<\/strong> <strong>Our very first trip was in 1997 when the country was rebounding from the brutality of the Khmer Rouge. We designed a private trip with Diethem travel based in Bangkok. There were still remnants of the rebels in certain areas of the country at that time. Marla and I were told to hide in our hotel bathtub if we heard gunfire. This was not the welcome we expected<\/strong>. <strong>We were also advised to walk 6&#8242; back from our guide while on trails in case of a land mine exploding! Cambodia is now a great place to visit!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div We stayed at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Resort. Our last visit to Siem Reap was in 2023 with two of our grandsons from Dallas. Our very first trip was in 1997 when the country was rebounding from the brutality of the Khmer Rouge. We designed a private trip with Diethem travel based in Bangkok. There were still remnants of the rebels in certain areas of the country at that time. Marla and I were told to hide in our hotel bathtub if we heard gunfire. This was not the welcome we expected. We were also advised to walk 6&#8242; back from our guide while on trails in case of a land mine exploding! Cambodia is now a great place to visit! As we entered the hotel we were greeted by young performers playing traditional music. The hotel grounds are very beautiful and exotic. The giant water lilies and pink lotus flowers are stunning. We explored an interesting gallery across the street from the hotel. Victor, our wonderful tour guide, joined us for a Tuk Tuk tour of Siem Reap. While on our Siem Reap tour we were entertained by a performance at a dance school. Lisa made some notes of a presentation on the history of the temples of Angkor at the hotel. The talk was by Kompheak Seng, an archaeologist at the Angkor National Museum. The presentation was very enlightening and helpful for context. Exploring the tiny lanes of the Siem Reap Night Market. It is said that Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and&nbsp;a magnificent example of Khmer architecture.&nbsp;The temple complex of Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu.
