A BEAUTIFUL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR PAXTON IN THE LOVELY VILLAGE OF GORBIO HIGH ABOVE MENTON

We were totally enchanted by our first visit to the perched village of Gorbio, high above Menton. A beautiful restaurant caught my eye on the main town square, Place de la Republique. It was closed so Marla and I said we would try it on our next visit. It took 6 years but we called them for a lunch reservation to celebrate Paxton’s birthday for our party of 12. They don’t have a website or email, and…they only accept cash payments.

Marla sits next to a celebrated elm tree planted in 1713. It commemorated the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht, which returned the County of Nice to the Duke of Savoy.

Checking out today’s specials while we wait for everyone to arrive. The restaurant was actually closed but they opened just for our birthday party.

The restaurant was like walking into…well… a delicious mix of part Paris flea market, and one’s eccentric grandmother’s ancient French chateau.

Our birthday boy arrives.

Our table had a gorgeous view.

Lisa and Paxton.

We were so glad Paxton was able to meet us from Boston.

Stacy’s family arrives.

A great table for 4 with a fabulous view!

Their comfy booths are filled with pillows and stuffed animals.

We were so grateful to have the entire family together for Paxton’s lunch.

The lunch began with an amuse-bouche and a delicious gazpacho soup.

Vaughn and Marla in conversation.

Beignet d’aubergines, a tasty dish of eggplant fritters, a local delicacy.

Jambon and melon.

This is a dish I will remember forever! I asked for a combination of daube of beef (their house specialty of long cooked short ribs) and a sensational ravioli. Oh my! One of my favorites of all-time!

A surprise birthday desert!

The washroom transports you a distant past. Crazy but interesting!

Remember what I said about “no credit cards”? I told the owner in jest, “I didn’t have any money so I need to work off my bill” then I popped behind the bar and started drying glasses with the owner, Yvan Bracco! The restaurant has been in the same family for 4 generations.

By the way, the restaurant was first built in 1880, and was purchased by Yvan’s great grandfather in 1924. They close at the end of October and reopen in March. They were awarded “L’Assiette Michelin.” Tradition reigns supreme in this simply wonderful restaurant.

Time to explore the village.

Paxton in the old town.

Looking out at the sea from Gorbio.

One enters the inner medieval village through a portal.

A scooter wizzed by.

Our explorer.

Ancient cobblestones. The name “Golbi” first appeared in 1157. It became part of France in 1860.

Gorbio is a rare place of enchantment and truly special for Marla and I. I hope we can return again soon.
