BANGKOK EXPLORATIONS WITH THE DECKER BROTHERS

Logan waits for the arrival of our hotel boat to Sathorn Pier for connection with the “Skytrain”.

The Boys’ Bangkok adventure continues.

Marla talks to Paxton about our schedule.

Logan is fascinated with all the activity on the Chao Phraya River.

The airconditioned Skytrain is the very best way to get around Bangkok with all the traffic jams and,…the heat!

We arrive at the Jim Thompson House.

This is an absolute must see video, describing Jim Thompson from the people who knew him best. I find a personal connection to this magical world of textiles and collecting of Asia art! “Oh,….did I mention,…Jim Thompson DISAPPEARED while taking a walk in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia while staying with friends in 1967! A fascinating mystery as his body was never recovered!”

The showroom by a koi pond.

This is the living room of the home. Jim entertained friends and famous visitors almost every night here. No photographs are allowed inside.

Fabulous carved doors and elephant sculpture.

An ancient stone Buddha carving in the garden.

Wonderful carving! Jim Thompson went on collection excursions on the weekends. In those days the best galleries were located in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

The home is made from several old Thai houses that Thompson joined together.

A large Spirit House is in the garden. I recently wrote a post about “Spirit Houses” you may enjoy seeing: http://gentryconnects.net/wp-admin/post.php?post=4270&action=edit

A gigantic koi woodblock for printing.

Ancient Chinese horse hitching post with a carved mythical animal.

Love the color red on the buildings and the paper umbrellas.

We all enjoyed seeing Jim Thompson’s collections.

We had to take the Boys to the Chatuchak weekend market. It contains a labyrinth of narrow passages with over 8000 market stalls! It is estimated at least 200,000 people visit the market on a typical weekend. There is everything from clothing and trinkets, antiques, furniture, and even tropical fish!

Of course I gravitated to the stalls selling antiques. I really wanted this set of miniature “Khon” masks. Marla wisely brought me back to reality by reminding me, “Dick, don’t we have enough stuff?”

Paxton and Logan admire a fabulous crystal specimen inRiver City.”

One of the beautiful Asian antique galleries on the upper floors of “River City.”

After a crazy and exhausting day, we all cooled off with a swim. In the evening we had refreshments at the Chatrium’s upstairs bar.

We could barely move after our huge day of explorations!

For Marla, the greatest gift is a sunset!

Wonderful!
