Renoir’s “Dance at Bougival” 1883, is a wonderful creation of passion, color, and movement. Bougival is located 15.3 km west from the center of Paris, on the left bank of the River Seine.
A close up of the detail.
“Turn in The Road” 1881, by Paul Cezanne. This landscape was once owned by Claude Monet.
“Street Singer” 1862, by Edourd Manet.
“Music Lesson” 1870, by Edourd Manet.
“Postman Joseph Roulin” 1888, Vincent van Gogh. He was a friend of van Gogh in Arles.
“Lullaby: Madame Augustine Roulin Rocking a Cradle” (La Berceuse) 1889, by Vincent van Gogh.
I find this painting to be very powerful. “Ravine” 1889, by Vincet van Gogh.
“Houses at Auvers, 1890. Van Gogh left the South of France in May, 1890, before settling in Auvers, Northwest of Paris. He painted a number of fascinating works in this area before his death in July.
“Madame Cezane in a Red Armchair” about 1877, by Paul Cezanne
This gigantic painting by Paul Gauguin ( 55″ x 148″), “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” 1897-98, is something to sit and ponder at length. Gauguin left Paris for Tahiti for 6 years. He had experienced a psychological crisis and was in a personal meltdown. It is believed the painting explores the fundamental questions about nature and the meaning of life. There are many questions about Gauguin’s treatment of women in this period and Pacific Islanders, thus clouding his legacy.
Right side view.
Gauguin’s “Landscape with Two Breton Women” 1889, features bold use of dramatic color.
Camille Pissarro’s “Two Peasant Women in a Meadow” (Le Pret) 1893.
“Morning Sunlight on the Snow, Eragny-sur-Epte”, 1895, by Pissarro.
Pissarro was one of Impressionism’s most daring innovators. This is “Pontoise, the Road to Gisors in Winter”, 1873.
Edvard Munch, Norwegian, 1863-1944, was strongly influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. This work is “Summer Night’s Dream (the Voice)” 1893.
“Fashionable Figures on the Beach” 1865, by Eugene Louis Boudin. Boudin was a strong proponent of painting “en plein air” (outdoors) and encouraged a young Claude Monet to do the same.
“Psyche” 1899 by Auguste Rodin.
I hope you enjoyed the tour of Impressionistic works from the MFA.
