I’ve always been fascinated by hotels with an interesting story and historic past. On our last trip to the Isle of Guernsey, we chose to stay at the “Old Government House, or affectionately called, “OGH”, by locals. It’s right in St. Peter Port and walkable to everywhere in town. After 12 hours of painful travel from Marbella, Spain, Marla enjoyed some Champagne as we checked in.
Guernsey, along with the other Channel Islands of Jersey, Alderney, Sark, and Herm, was occupied by the Germans on June 29, 1940, after Winston Churchill de-militarized the Islands. My Brother-in-law was evacuated to England when he was only 5 years old. See my blog: “The German Occupation of Guernsey. An Island in Danger.” http://gentryconnects.net/?p=1565
After the occupation, Old Government House Hotel was used as military headquarters and then as a soldiers’ home for the rest of the war.
The Islands were liberated on May 9, 1945.
My nephew Steve, reads a sign outside the hotel’s entrance. It is part of the “WW2 Occupation Trail”, popular for history buffs visiting Guernsey. https://www.visitguernsey.com/see-and-do/driving-routes/island-occupation-trail/
Marla, my niece Suzanne, nephew Steve and wife Karen, admire some of the beautiful historical Guernsey maps in the hotel.
This is a great YouTube video on the history of the Old Government House Hotel.
I loved all the decorative touches in the hotel! The hotel is a bit posh without being stuffy!
The “Sir John Coward Room” is a nice place to relax, enjoy a cup of tea, and read.
I love the chandeliers and old paintings.
Marla and I had breakfast in the Brasserie Restaurant each morning. Our stay was in mid-October and the hotel was very quiet which was fine with us!
The Brasserie Restaurant bar.
The Curry Room serves delicious Indian cuisine in an elegant setting.
There are a couple of small rooms perfect for tea or cocktails.
Another Fabulous chandelier!
The front entrance.
We all walked back to the hotel after dinner on our last night.
A view of the back of the hotel. Our hotel room was tiny but very romantic. We chose a package that included breakfast and massage treatments for two at $289 a night which I thought was a steal!
Having high tea at the hotel is a wonderful treat. I miss the scones, jam, Guernsey butter, and clotted cream. Yum!
These are a few of the upper-end rooms each with ocean views. For a stay in wonderful Guernsey, the Old Government is hard to beat!
