AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT,…MY FAVORITE SPY & POLITICAL THRILLER MOVIES AND ON TV

I just finished reading Alan Cumming’s great book on espionage and politics in China, “Typhoon.”It’s a compelling thriller in the vein of John le Carre. The book started me thinking about many exciting spy and political thriller movies and shows. I’ll share some of my very favorites like “The Night Manager” pictured above. Most are available on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

“The Night Manager” is one of my very favorite thrillers and a must-see! The scenes shot in Mallorca are beautiful and were the motivation for my first trip to the island. A season 2 is in the works!

Gary Oldman is great in the 2011 version of the John le Carre classic. If you can find the 1979 version (100 score with Rotten Tomatoes) with Alec Guinness watch it first!

Marla and I enjoyed watching “Counterpart.” The show is a bit dark and takes some serious viewing. Give it a chance and you might get hooked as we did! 100 points with Rotten Tomatoes!

“Babylon Berlin” is a neo-noir crime police and political drama taking place in 1929 berlin. 100 Rotten Tomatoes! For adult audiences!

Tom Hughes stars in the period spy drama, “The Spy.” He helps stop a Soviet plot to destroy Britain in 1972.

I loved this three-season CIA thriller in modern-day Berlin!

“Secret City” is an Australian political thriller starring a wonderful Anna Torv. 100 Rotten Tomatoes!

David Tennant stars in this period political drama based on a novel by Alan Furst. Very interesting!

THIS 1965 MOVIE IS A CLASSIC OF THE GENRE! At the height of the Cold War, British spy Alec Leamas (Richard Burton) is nearly ready to retire, but first, he has to take on one last dangerous assignment. Going deep undercover, he poses as a drunken, disgraced former MI5 agent in East Germany.

Alec Guinness returns in “Smiley’s People.”British master spy George Smiley returns for a final encounter with his deadly Soviet counterpart, Karla, in an Emmy-nominated adaptation of John Le Carre’s sequel to `Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.’ 100 Rotten Tomatoes!

Netflix just launched “The Spy” starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Haven’t watched it but I will.

I also loved “Homeland”, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”, and the “Condor.”
